Norwegian Breakaway smoking areas, and the fee that catches people out
Get this one wrong and it’ll cost you, literally.
Smoking areas on Breakaway are deliberately tight. Cigarettes, cigars, pipes and vapes are only allowed in a limited section of Deck 15 midship, port side, and at Spice H2O, the ship’s adults-only sundeck on the starboard side.
Every stateroom, every balcony and all the indoor public spaces are smoke-free too, bar the cigar lounge and casino. Same goes for the jogging track, outdoor sports venues, children’s pool zones, Vibe Beach Club, Posh Beach Club and The Waterfront promenade. Even The Haven, NCL’s private suite complex, keeps its courtyard smoke-free, though its forward Sun Deck is one of the few places on the ship where the rule bends.
The friction point: plenty of passengers assume a balcony is fair game, since it’s outdoors and private. It isn’t. Light up in a cabin or on a balcony and you’ll get a cleaning fee straight onto your onboard account, whether or not you were the one holding the cigarette.
The workaround: mark the two designated smoking areas on your deck plan before you board, Deck 15 midship and Spice H2O, and treat everywhere else outdoors, your balcony included, as off-limits.
Does the Norwegian Breakaway have a laundry room?
No, there’s no self-service laundry room or coin-operated launderette on board, which matters if you’re planning a longer sailing.
You’ll sometimes see it suggested that Breakaway class ships have self-serve machines somewhere on board. They don’t. NCL’s own guidance and independent reviewers agree there’s no self-service laundry anywhere in the fleet, this ship included. Laundry is a paid valet service, full stop.
