All ships dock at Prince George Wharf, the Nassau Cruise Port, which reopened a couple of years ago after a large scale redevelopment led by a consortium under Global Ports Holding. The terminal spits you straight out onto Bay Street, no shuttle or tender needed.

If you want sand, calm water and not much else to think about, Bimini wins hands down. If you want shopping, a water park, local history and the buzz of a real city, Nassau packs more into the same few hours.

Families with older kids tend to lean towards Nassau for Atlantis and Blue Lagoon Island, while couples and anyone who finds busy ports draining tend to prefer Bimini’s slower pace. Neither is the wrong choice, they’re just built for different kinds of day.

How far is Bimini from Nassau, and can you travel between them?

Sources don’t agree on a single figure here. Wikipedia puts the distance at around 130 miles, flight distance calculators put it closer to 121 miles, and routing tools such as Rome2Rio quote a much higher 287 miles, which reflects a real travel route rather than the straight line between the two.

What matters more for planning is that there’s no direct ferry or road connection between Bimini and Nassau. The only way to cover that distance is by air, with Bahamasair, Tailwind and other carriers running about three flights a day between Lynden Pindling International Airport and Bimini North, taking roughly 30 minutes direct.

In practice, that means Bimini and Nassau are two separate cruise stops, not a combinable day trip. Don’t build an itinerary around seeing both in one call.

Getting to Bimini without a cruise, the ferry option

Independent travellers can reach Bimini from Florida on the Baleària Caribbean fast ferry Jaume II, which makes the roughly 51 mile crossing from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades Terminal 21 to North Bimini in about two hours.

The catch is scheduling. Sailings run only three days a week, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, departing Fort Lauderdale at 9am and returning at 7pm. Miss that window and you’re waiting days for the next one, so this only really works if you build your whole trip around those departure days rather than turning up and hoping for the best.

Nassau’s rebuilt port can now berth three Oasis class ships at once, and it’s built to take Icon class vessels too, so on a busy day you could have thousands of passengers ashore all at the same time.

Bimini works differently. Resorts World’s berth takes one ship at a time, so whoever’s ashore that day has Beach Club 360 pretty much to themselves.
